Last year we reviewed the excellent NEO Storage from Hong Kong-based manufacturer MINIX. The NEO Storage managed to cram a lot of technology into a small footprint, together with built-in storage options: 120GB and 240GB. It was a remarkable piece of kit, and one that’s used frequently. However, the company has raised the bar again, this time with the NEO Storage Plus.

The Storage Plus is a slimline external peripheral, measuring 110 x 50 x 15mm and is available in Silver and Space Gray. In the box you’ll find the Storage Plus, a small USB-C to USB-C cable, and a branded MINIX padded velvet carry case.

The design of the Storage Plus isn’t too different from the previous model. This time, though, MINIX has upped the amount of available storage to a choice of either 480GB or 960GB SSD. The top of the Plus features the MINIX logo and the model: either 480GB or 960GB, and a power LED. To one side there’s a 4K capable HDMI port, USB-C power pass-through, and a pair of USB 3.0 ports. On the end there’s a gigabit Ethernet port, and on the opposite end of the device there’s the USB-C port that provides connectivity and power to the unit. On the base of the Plus there are four rubber feet to stop it from slipping around on any surface.

Operation of the Storage Plus is extremely easy; simply plug the device into an available USB-C port on your computer, laptop etc. and you can start using the ports as well as the available storage. Being driver-free is especially helpful, but MINX has also included a handy Realtek network driver for the gigabit Ethernet port in case it’s missed by your operating system. Incidentally, the NEO Storage Plus supports both macOS and Windows 10 operating systems.

The ports all work perfectly fine, as to be expected. The HDMI port outputs a good 4K resolution without any perceivable issues with quality, and the gigabit Ethernet is a great choice for those on the edge of the WiFi signal. The built-in SSD storage is as quick as you would expect. In our tests, using the ATTO Disk Benchmark, the Storage Plus managed a very good 421MB per second write and 453MB per second read speed based on a 8MB file transfer; with very little change over smaller sized files.

As for pricing, expect to pay £119.90 for the 480GB model, and £164.90 for the 960GB model – which is pretty good considering what you get. Overall, MINIX has once again done a superb job with one of its peripherals. There’s plenty of connectivity, it’s easy to use, and it features a blisteringly fast and capable SSD. Well done MINIX. This is one peripheral we’ll highly recommend.
