Not so long ago, a 1TB portable solid-state drive (SSD) would cost you more than your Mac. Today, the LaCie Mobile SSD (which is also available in 500GB and 2TB capacities) is affordable, if not exactly cheap.

With speeds of up to 540MB/s when connected to a USB-C port, it’s very fast indeed. If you’re not lucky enough to have a super-high-speed USB-C port on your computer, there’s a USB 3.0 lead supplied too, which is, of course, backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

It’s when connected to a USB-C port, the Mobile SSD really shows its worth. You can edit video with no lag at all, and copy even the largest of files without making yourself a cup of tea while it works.

It’s a looker too; a perfect match for your Mac, and small enough to fit into your shirt pocket. Plus it’s drop-resistant up to three metres, so it’s robust as well as fast and attractive.
