iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 – Help to Get You Started

The latest software updates for the iPhone and iPad made some major changes. Here's how to update your Apple Phone or Tablet, and how to get the most from the new operating systems.

Updating Your iPhone or iPad

To check for a new version of iOS or iPadOS, first of all open the Settings app from the Home screen. It’s the silver coloured icon showing a series of cogs. From the next screen, scroll up until you see the General link and then tap it.

In General, tap Software Update. Your iDevice checks with Apple to see if there is a newer version than the one you’re running. If there isn’t, you’re told you’re up to date, but if there is, you can install it now.

If an update’s available, tap the Download and Install link. You may need to plug your iPhone or iPad into a mains power supply if the battery’s low. After entering your passcode, the update downloads to your device.

When it’s finished tap Install Now to begin the installation process. The update installs and your phone or tablet restarts; don’t turn it off whilst this is going on. After the restart, you must enter your passcode when prompted and and you might have to agree to Terms and Conditions. Then you’re ready to enjoy your new version of iOS or iPadOS.
