Need help choosing an antivirus program for your computer? One which will keep you protected from the majority of threats online, but won’t slow down your computer in the process? Worried about ransomware, spyware, malware and viruses? Then look no further, as we take a look at three of the very best free antivirus programs available for your Windows PC. If you don’t already have any antivirus software installed on your computer, these free tools are really worth considering.
Avira Free Antivirus
Download From: www.avira.com
If you are prepared to spend a bit more time exploring and learning your security software, then Avira is just about the best free antivirus program you can download right now. It has a brilliant detection rate, and from our tests, a very low rate of false positives. If you decide to have all of the features activated, it can sap a large chunk of system resources, but this is often the case with any similar software.
What it does best is detect and block viruses, and we would suggest only using this feature of the software in older computers. The extra (completely free) features include a VPN client, system performance tools, and a custom privacy browser for safer Internet use. All work extremely well, and are well worth checking out, but the star is the main virus scanner. It works so well, updates very regularly and provides such good detection and customisation options that it’s definitely our pick for users who already have some experience with antivirus or security software.
Panda Free Antivirus
Download From: www.pandasecurity.com
The free antivirus software from Panda is one of our three favourites partly due to its easy-to-use interface, but that’s not to say that it doesn’t offer brilliant protection for your PC. The main thing to look for in antivirus software is detection rate (on average, how often the software detects threats), but there are other considerations: From how much the software effects the smooth running of your computer, to the number of false positives it flags up.
Panda’s detection rate is just about as good as any of the market leaders, and you will barely notice it working in the background on most reasonably new computers, but the rate of false positives could certainly do with being reduced. But hey, it’s better to detect a few false viruses, than not detect a few real ones, right? If you want a good level of defence against viruses, but want software that doesn’t confuse, Panda Free Antivirus is a great choice.
Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition
Download From: www.bitdefender.co.uk
Bitdefender’s offering is definitely a great choice if you are looking for simple-to-use, set and forget antivirus software (and let’s be honest, who isn’t looking for that?) It not only has little impact on system performance when set up properly, but it boasts some of the best detection rates of any free antivirus software available right now. Although it has similar pros and cons as Panda (see above), it does offer less in terms of customisation, which you might want later as you get more comfortable using it.
There are extras that you can add if you choose, including the secure browser that seems to be the new norm with this type of program, and a secure password manager. But it definitely falls short of the add-ons the two previously mentioned programs offer. Another slightly annoying thing about Bitdefender is that is doesn’t allow you to schedule a scan, something that almost all other software of this type does. But if you want something you can install, set up and forget, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition is recommended.
